Sports academy's training camp

The South East Regional Academy of Sport (SERAS) Snowsports Program held its second and final training camp for 2012 at the University of Canberra (UC) recently.

The program includes Jindabyne participant Karl van Goor.

Run in partnership with NSW Snowsports and Snowsports ACT, the program is designed to focus on the physiological, psychological and personal development of the scholarship holders.

The young athletes are drawn from across NSW and the ACT and represent the disciplines of alpine skiing, ski cross, freestyle moguls, cross country skiing and snowboarding.

On day one of the camp the athletes were put through a battery of fitness tests by SERAS intern students. Anthony Khoury, a coach from Ski and Snowboarding Australia, conducted an acrobatics session with the athletes at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Gymnastics Centre. Afternoon sessions included a sports psychology session on performance anxiety and a pool recovery session at the AIS.

Day two of the camp was devoted to strength and conditioning assessments and programming with SERAS interns Joe Northey, Emma Friend and Vanessa Gaynor.

For some of the athletes this camp was a post-season assessment while others in the program will shortly travel to the northern hemisphere to continue with their competitive skiing and snowboarding events.
