Cloud seeding to boost winter tourism

THE RECENT announcement by New South Wales Government of a continuation of Snowy Hydro's Cloud Seeding Program has been enthusiastically welcomed by Tourism Snowy Mountains. The current trial program is to be extended beyond 2014 as a permanent operation.

Several independent studies have shown that the cloud seeding program has increased snowfalls by at least 14 without any negative environmental impact.

CEO of Tourism Snowy Mountains, Peter Sheppard, said the NSW government's announcement was great news and a significant boost to the area's economy.

"With visitor spending representing about 17 per cent of the local economy's total output, the initiative of helping Mother Nature to put more snow on the ground through the ski season will have a positive effect in enhancing Snowy Mountains' winter attractions," he said.

"Tourism Snowy Mountains acknowledges MP for Monaro, John Barilaro, who has effectively campaigned to secure the continuation of the cloud seeding program. His efforts are very much appreciated by the area's tourism industry."
