Aerial weed spraying hits hard

An aerial spray program targeting the noxious weeds Serrated Tussock and African lovegrass was recently carried out by the Snowy River Shire Council. The program took place from the 9th of September until the 14th of September 2012 in conjunction with aerial spray company Combined Agworks and Cooma-Monaro Shire Council.

Flupropanate was distributed from a helicopter over dense and impassable terrain at a rate consistent with the Chemical label. Twenty-eight landholders took advantage of the helicopter being in the area and participated in the program willingly, a total of 868 hectares were treated within the shire.

This should give the involved landholders a head start with their weed control program for this season and into the next germination phase.

For those who missed out or are interested in utilising a helicopter for agricultural spraying it is intended for the council and adjoining shires to coordinate a similar program annually. The helicopter may also return to the Snowy River/ Monaro region in December-January for thistle control if enough interest is shown. Please contact The Vegetation office on 6451 1180 for more information.

Effective weed control programs should be well underway with Serrated tussock clearly identifiable and African lovegrass greening up, Thistle are in rosette stage, Gorse and Broom will be flowering soon as too St johns wort. It is the responsibility of all land owners and occupiers to control noxious weeds, reduce their numbers, spread and incidence and inhibit plants from reproducing..
