Canberra Gunners aim to extend winning streak

The Canberra Gunners will be looking to extend their winning streak to five games when they host the Frankston Blues at Belconnen Basketball Stadium on Friday night.

After a sluggish start to the season, the Gunners have hit a purple patch of form to rocket up to fifth position in the South Conference of the men's South East Australian Basketball League.

The only downside is the departure of guard Tad Dufelmeier, who has left for US college commitments.

But Gunners coach Shawn McEachin is confident other players can step up in his absence.

“Andrew Murphy will be a reliable contributor and Sean Richardson and Dylan Simpson are also guys who will get their opportunity,'' McEachin said.

''Mitch Brown will also come in from the Gunners Academy.

“We were really good at the offensive end (in last week's 116-98 win against Sandringham) and I was extremely happy with the intensity and selflessness shown throughout the game.''

The men's game tips off at 8pm, with the Canberra Capitals Academy to take on the Frankston Lady Blues at 6pm.

The games will be played in support of Lara Parkes, a member of the Norths Basketball Club and long-time Canberra Capitals supporter who has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia.

A silent auction will be held as well as a half-time gold coin donation shoot out.
