SNOW arrived just in time for the opening weekend of the season. While it was limited flakes falling, it was enough to keep plenty of snow playing kids and their families happy at both Perisher and Thredbo.

Perisher managed a good night of snow making on Friday evening and had the ski carpet open for beginner skiers and boarders to have a slide and participate in lessons, and a mini terrain park for the keen freestylers.

The weekend crowds had their ears tuned to the sounds of mountain music with Thredbo hosting the Sneaky Sound System for a village gig and the Peak Festival blaring out across Perisher resort at multiple bars and restaurants. Locals and visitors were lapping up the tunes at the Peak Festival and wandering between venues to see their favourite artists including local Jindabyne Ukuleles Kollective who were very popular.

Cooma's Vendulka was a big hit at The Eiger on Saturday night and the Hip Replacements played at Guthega Inn all weekend and the big name acts The Herd and Public Opinion Afro Orchestra on the Smiggs stage.

The Perisher Historical Society hosted their annual dinner at the Marritz Hotel with a good turnout of club members, officials and former Olympic skiers Zali Steggall and Jenny Owens also in attendance.

Ron Webb was guest speaker and showed his vast collection of images of lift installations in Perisher where he has been involved in the construction of most lifts at Perisher. Ron also had running commentary on his show, much to the delight of the audience, as he reminisced about the old days.

With cold nights the resort areas fired up the snow guns and big firework displays lit up the night sky at Thredbo and Perisher.

A heavy dusting of snow greeted revelers on Sunday morning and now with the official opening weekend behind us everyone awaits further snowfalls to really kick start the 2014 snow season.
