THIS weekend will see the official launch of the Bushpigs 2014 season.
After being premiers for the last two seasons the Pigs are looking to do it again although this year's team will be slightly different from last year.
The retirement of team stalwarts Mick Needham and Mick Bottom opens upan opportunity for some of the younger members to force their way into the starting lineup. Whilst the team is not actually having a run this weekend co-coaches Matt Caldwell and Charlie Mcphee are confident of a strong showing in the first round of the competition in a few weeks time.
There was a move in the off season to combine the Monaro and South Coast competitions but the extra travel was deemed to put to much pressure on clubs and options need to be explored further. Both the Miss Piggies and Bushpigs have kicked off the year with mixed results in preseason 7s competitions. Both teams have been struggling for numbers at training but are confident of having a good start to the season.
The Golden Oldies held their annual "Bothy's Boot" tournament a few weeks ago and it was amazing to see over 80 mature rugby players have a great day of rugby and a night out afterwards. The carnival this year doubled numbers from last year and with the feedback from the weekend this concept can only continue to grow. This Saturday will see the juniors attend their annual Boot Camp at Lake Crackenback Resort, with good junior numbers and the club expecting to field an extra juniors team this year it should be another strong year. Juniors training has kicked off and is from 4.45pm every Tuesday until touch footy finishes when it will go to Tuesday and Thursday.
The club is looking to host a Juniors gala day on Saturday April 12, with a few ACT clubs expressing an interest in attending. Any interested junior players are most welcome to come along to training to see if they are keen on the game.
This Saturday also sees the club hold its annual season launch and jumper sponsor lottery at the Lake Jindabyne Hotel.
The night will consist of rounds of trivia plus other games, with some great prizes up for grabs. The night only costs $10 and will include finger food and the Jumper number draw. Get a table, get some mates and come for some fun.
