WHILE most attention has been on the Winter Olympics there are other winter sports achievements happening closer to home - such as Jindabyne's Antonia Murphy being selected to compete in the Whistler Cup alpine ski race.
Antonia, 13, in Year 8 at Jindabyne Central School has just been selected for the U14 NSWACT Whistler Cup team.
This is very exciting for Antonia and is the culmination of two years of extremely hard work on and off the slopes.
The Whistler Cup is an International Race Festival held over three days on April 4, 5 and 6 in Whistler Resort, Canada. Teams from Italy, Canada, Argentina, Norway and Denmark will be competing along with teams from clubs and provinces across Canada.
The event is in its 22nd year and is considered one of the premier international children's ski races. There are three girls in the state team with Antonia being the No 1 racer. She will compete in two events at the race - giant slalom and slalom.
She had to meet a variety of criteria to be selected but including having the correct points under Ski and Snowboard Australia's arduous points selection system.
Her points were accumulated last season by winning or placing in all major events such as the Thredbo Cup, the Blue Cow Cup and the finals of these events at the Children's Championships at Mt Hotham. Following this event, she was selected to participate in a special coaching session with the Australian alpine coach.
In addition, she did extremely well in events such as regional, state and national interschools in alpine, moguls and skier cross along with the Redlands Cup, Scots Cup and Knox Pymble Cup.
She has been awarded a Perisher Winter Sports Club part scholarship towards training for this year and a SERAS training scholarship.
Antonia is currently ranked sixth in the U14s in Australia and has a Children's World Cup points ranking (Aust) of 21 (that's all male and female U14 and U16s in Australia).
Antonia is seeking any sponsorship in the lead up to the race in terms of equipment or financial support.
Antonia is an accomplished swimmer and surf life saver and has been competing in both senior and junior surf life saving carnivals at Moruya.
