THE Snowy River Shire Council is currently working on a long term plan to improve its management of playgrounds across the shire and is seeking community input.
The aim of completing a playground strategy is for the council to -
- Understand the current and future needs of the community.
- Analyse the current level of playground provision.
- Conduct an audit of all playground across the shire.
- Plan for future playground development or upgrade within a realistic scope for the council to manage.
The council is responsible for the management of 14 playgrounds within the shire. Community participation and feedback is an important step to develop an understanding of what the community priorities are on a range of issues such as the current use of each playground, equity, playground rational, quality verses quantity, diversity, access, future priorities, safety and maintenance.
The council needs community feedback and a survey can be completed on-line via Council's website www.snowyriver.nsw.gov.au. It will be available until February 21.
Alternatively people can ask for a copy of the survey at the council's Berridale office.
The Playground Strategy discussion paper can also be found on the council's website. The discussion paper describes all 14 playgrounds, compares our playground provision with other shires, describes current maintenance schedule and costs and discusses the key issues around playground management.
The discussion paper says there is a need for more strategic focus for recreational facilities.
"The lack of strategic planning inevitably leads to some duplication and under utilisation of facilities, particularly where the population is changing, or where there is demand for particular facilities."
The process of undertaking a strategic plan will enable the council to better utilise our limited funds where it is needed.
