Growing skills for scouts garden market

The 1st Kosciusko Scout group has been busy preparing for it's Inaugural Scouts Garden Market to be held this Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

Wanting the members to learn useful gardening and event skills, the leaders have been guiding the scouts for quite a few weeks in the lead up to the Garden Market.

The joeys, cubs and scouts have been busy with a number of activities.

Under the guidance of local gardener Jacinta Braun, the children have carefully planted out herb trays and strawberry hanging baskets requiring them to prepare, plant, mulch, feed and water the plants.

They have also made a seed planter from a recycled plastic bottle which they need to look after until it is a certain size in order to get their gardening badge.

Another activity involved colouring in some of the posters being used to promote the event.

Things then got physical with the kids needing to help bag up eucalyptus mulch to be sold on the day.

There will also be some joey, cub and scout helpers keenly involved.

The event will have a number of features including:

* Herb, petunia and strawberry planters.

* Bagged mulch, compost, potting mix and natural fertilizer.

* Iona Nursery.

* Sausage sizzle.

* Cakes, slices and drinks.

* Garden craft.

* Wine orders.

* Jumping castle.

* 11.30 - a presentation by Dal Dutch on keeping strawberry plants

The Scouts Garden Market is being held at the 1st Kosciusko Scout Group Hall on Barry Way in Jindabyne.
