Foul and fabulous at Dalgety's Team Penning

THE weekend at Dalgety saw both foul and fabulous for the annual Team Penning and Show Shear events. Saturday was foul with gale force winds but those who came to compete were fabulous.

The shearing competitors and 130 Team Penners who rode on Saturday are all made of pretty tough stuff and delivered plenty of action. Sunday gave the historic town sensational weather for the 60 riders for Saddle Up Sunday with the youngest riders just 4-years-old.

Team Penning results

Steven Johnson, Allan Guthrie, and Ray McDonald all local were the Open Winners of the Team Penning, notable due to the fact that this event has never been won by a local team.

The Fitzgerald Family of Nimmitabel cleaned up over both days in the Penning, Stockmen's Challenge and Barrel Racing with Will and Jane Fitzgerald along with their cousin Samantha Rudd who was one of the most successful riders winning the under17 Stockmen's Challenge, 2nd and 3rd in Junior Team Penning and placing in the team barrel racing.

Will, Jane and Samantha almost won the junior Team Penning when they blitzed it time-wise but were disqualified as they finished when one of their horses was bumped into the pen with the cattle and had to settle for 2nd.

But it was Sunday where their sister Annette showed great girl power and an amazing run to win the Open Stockmen's Challenge against some pretty stiff competition from the men.

The winner of the Stumpy Freebody Sportsmanship Award went to Jessie Trent Smith.

Show Shear results

Bombala and Cathcart had great success along with the Dalgety locals plus the standout form of Logan Brownlee only 12-years-old winning the Learners section. The open was won by Pat O'Ryan from Dalgety, with the Thompson family from Dalgety putting in a great effort.

Father and son went head-to-head of the intermediate with Brett Thompson (2nd) just edging out his father Robert (3rd) . Blake Thompson (3rd) doing the same to Brett (4th) in the Senior.

Ben Brotherton of Cathcart was very successful winning the Intermediate and the Senior events. Well done Ben and Hugh Green with double placings (2nd Senior and 6th Open).
