Monday September 9 saw 29 students from Snowy Mountains Grammar School board a mini bus bound for the Sydney Olympic Athletics track. Even though the snow season was still under way, the students were representing their school at the 23rd ISA Athletics Carnival.
The ISA is the Independent Sporting Association and it is the representative pathway for 20 independent schools from around NSW. The ISA Athletics Carnival has over 360 events. It covers all track and field events and is home to 1,500 plus athletes. The competition is fierce.
SMGS students competed against schools from the Central Coast, Bathurst, Orange, through Sydney and south to Campbelltown and Bowral.
The schools are a mix of co-educational and single sex, and can be small country schools (like SMGS) or huge metropolitan city schools.
The Carnival is exciting, loud and colourful, and it is a wonderful opportunity for the SMGS students to compete against students from different areas.
The ISA offers students representative opportunities to compete against major school associations in NSW.
From these associations, students are selected for the New South Wales Combined Independent Schools (NSWCIS) representative teams to compete against Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) and Combined High Schools (CHS).
SMGS is one of the smallest schools in the ISA and is proud to participate in such a strong association.
As a Division 2 school, a number of students came home with a ribbon from the Carnival; although this was not the major goal. To wear your school colours with pride, cheer and support your team and challenge yourself against others was the main objective, and for this, the team was hugely successful.
The percentage trophies are still being calculated, and SMGS is in with a chance of placing. The school also had some personal bests from the Carnival. All athletes who place in the top three in the event go onto the NSWCIS Carnival in the ISA representative Athletics team. This Carnival is the first step towards making the NSW ALL Schools Carnival and on to Nationals.
Three SMGS students have been selected to participate at the NSWCIS Athletics on Wednesday September 18 as part of the ISA team. Congratulations to Aaron Pidcock, selected in the 16 years Triple Jump, Eliza Booth, selected in the 16 years Shot Put and Javelin, and Grace Woonton, selected for the 17 years High Jump.
The SMGS community wishes them all the very best, and looks forward to hearing of their results next week.
