As the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi draws closer, the shadow teams, from which the Australian representatives will be chosen, have been announced.
It is an exciting time for Snowy Mountains Grammar School (SMGS) as one of the current students, Matilda Coates, has been selected in the team for Alpine GS and Slalom.
Matilda has been working and training very hard toward this goal and her friends, teachers and family congratulate her on how far she has come in recent years.
Matilda is currently in Year 12, studying for her Higher School Certificate and facing the pressures of assessment tasks and examinations while trying to stay focussed on her training.
Matilda has had great support from her teachers as she is often away from school and even overseas for periods of time, but her work is rarely interrupted.
She is determined, organised and very keen to succeed in all that she does.
Matilda won the Pierre De Coubertin Award for leadership ,commitment, and outstanding achievement in sport this year and she will now go on to represent the region in this coveted award.
She has always been a keen skier and she has competed in children's races and snowsports Interschool competitions since her early primary school days.
Some years ago Matilda broke her leg quite badly and her recovery was painful but at no stage did she compromise her dream of competing at the highest level.
Matilda has returned to the competition scene with even more courage and drive.
Matilda is coached by Brad Wall and while in Australia she trains with the Thredbo Racing Club.
