Cracker of a fete for Jindabyne

MEET Australia's next generation of whip crackers. Four young Jindabyne Central School students will put their whip cracking talents on display at the school's fete on Easter Saturday.

Bronwyn Brandon, 14, Breanna Arnold, 12, Caitlin Brandon, 11, and Ben King, 9, have been hard at work on a demonstration that will feature some famous apparatus and impressive two-handed routines.

Whip cracking is perhaps not the most obvious sport to attract young girls but the Brandon sisters were lured to it after their grandparents, Sue and Frank Scott, performed in the opening ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

The girls' grandparents, along with their uncle John Scott, were among the 120 stockmen who showcased Australia to the world in the opening few minutes of the Sydney Games.

The whips featured in the opening ceremony have since been passed onto Bronwyn and Caitlin, who will use them in their heart-stopping demonstration at Jindabyne Central School's fete on March 30.

"Caitlin and I used to go to Pop's farm in Canberra and he taught us how to crack with little whips," Bronwyn said.

"We've been doing it since we were about five or six and we've just improved over the years."

Bronwyn and Caitlin, along with Breanna, compete in whip cracking tournaments around the region and have regularly managed top-three performances.

Ben, a Year Four student, began learning to crack whips last year and hopes to start competition in the near future.

They're hoping their display in front of fellow students might attract other youngsters to the sport.

The four will perform at Jindabyne Central School's fete on Easter Saturday from 10am-3pm at Park Road, Jindabyne.

A big day of activities and entertainment are planned including a jumping castle, competitions, white elephant, food stalls, plant stalls, fresh produce and demonstrations by local SES, fire, police and ambulance officers.
