'Much loved' Dr Geoffrey Cocker of Berridale has been named as the Snowy River Shire's Citizen of the Year.
He received his special award at an Australian Day ceremony in Banjo Paterson Park on Saturday from Mayor John Cahill.
He joined Young Citizen of the Year Owen Pearson of Dalgety in a small but select band of local residents who have been honoured in this way.
A third award, for Community Event of the Year, went to Jindy Idol.
In expressing his appreciation, Dr Cocker said he had great support at the Berridale Surgery, and from other doctors in the region, particularly those in Cooma.
He described them as some of the finest doctors in Australia, if not the world.
Dr Cocker spoke about the difficulties of providing medical services in rural areas and urged the community to hold onto to their doctors.
He expressed reservations about the proposed medical super clinic for Jindabyne and whether it would succeed.
He said it needed vision and for doctors to be involved in the planning, although he had not been.
Owen Pearson, in expressing his thanks for the award of Young Citizen of the Year, said the award was for his work on the Youth Council. This work had been rewarding because it provided an opportunity to make a difference and "to get stuff done."
