Price on carbon must actually reduce pollution

Price on carbon must actually reduce pollution

01 Apr, 2011 01:03 PM
EDITOR: The level of hysteria against a carbon tax which is being whipped up in some quarters is of great concern.

The government's response, which is to promise compensation for all and sundry, is also a worry, as it will simply fund us all to keep polluting as we always have done.

Surely an effective carbon tax should work something like this: A carbon tax is applied to high emitting fuels such as coal and oil. The revenue raised is used to subsidise large and small scale renewable energy generation, fuel efficient vehicles, quality public transport etc. These greener options become cheaper as a result. Consumers choose the cheaper options.

Supply of renewable energy, pubic transport, efficient cars etc increase in response to consumer demand. Demand for coal and oil declines. Greenhouse gas emissions are reduced.

If the tax (or an ETS for that matter), works to make renewable energy cheaper, then people who choose the cheaper, cleaner options should have nothing to fear from a carbon price. (Even now the price of rooftop solar power has fallen dramatically and is within the reach of many households. A 2kW system costs around $5500 and will power an average house for some 40 years.)

Here in the Snowy Mountains we have a lot to lose in a warming climate. We need a price on carbon but we need one which actually works.

Good on you, Kate, for caring about our planet.

We need to back the trifecta - a price on pollution, energy conservation and renewable energy.

We can stand like kangaroos in the spotlight, thinking, "This isn't really happening to me," or fantasising about going to another planet or we can get real and act effectively.

It was the saddest thing in the world when Kevin Rudd set up the insulation scheme only to have it trashed by greedy, dishonest people. They don't seem to understand that we need the jobs and the energy conservation that such green schemes provide.

I hope Australians have the good sense to back the price on pollution. Otherwise I guess the harsh laws of evolution will have proved that we are too stupid to survive. Pity we'll take the whole planet with us as we poison the air, soil, rivers and oceans.

Kate, 2Kw is no where near enough to power a home, unless you intend not running a kettle and a toaster at the same time?

The average kettle uses 1.8 - 3kw, A toaster 0.8-1.5kw, HWS 4.5Kw...
