Slow start then great win for Berridale

09 Feb, 2012 09:39 AM
Welcome back to all our players and friends. What a fantastic Men’s Final in the Australian Open held in Melbourne – spectators certainly got their money’s worth with just under six hours of spectacular tennis. Whether you were cheering for Djokovic or Nadal – both warriors gave it everything they had and tennis was the winner with no tantrums, squealing or racquet smashing.

Monaro summer competition

Tennis got underway to a slow start in 2012 with our first match scheduled at home cancelled when the Numeralla Rats forfeited due to a lack of players. This is always a shame, as we have several “floaters” who can be called upon to fill in when needed.

On to our second round which was against the Snowy Topblues team in Cooma. This resulted in a convincing win for the Berridale team with 13 sets to three and 90 games to 62. It was not all one-sided with a few close matches ending in 7-5 and 7-6. Berridale fielded a rather strong ladies team consisting of Sue Luccarda, Wendy Bruce, Kerrie Evans and new member, Kathleen Parkyn. Well done ladies and welcome aboard Kathleen.

Playing for the Berridale men’s side was Richard Lyons, Hermann Obermaier, Bill Smits and Tony Hayes. Best wishes go to Anthony Wellsmore who is carrying an injury.

Social Tennis

Come and have a hit of tennis and a cuppa on Monday mornings from 9am-12 noon – we would love to see you. Also, Monday night social tennis has re-started so get out and enjoy the cool summer evenings under lights.

If you know of a small sporting group who could make use of our free BBQ, please contact Bill Smits on 64563573 for more details. Unfortunately, there was not enough interest to organise tennis coaching for our younger players during the school holidays, but we will keep trying to compete with the many other activities being offered to our youth.
