Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club has recommenced regular weekly sailing races after the annual Christmas and New Year break. Four catamarans and five mono-hulls turned up on Wednesday last week to compete in heat nine of the 2011/12 Twilight series.
The club’s commodore, Martin van Weel, manned the start boat and sent the fleet off into a light easterly breeze. The cats all had poor starts and let the mono-hulls get away towards the Quarry mark. Ian Foster and his Hobie 17 left the beach late and Tim Symons on his Hobie 17 chased down the fleet to pass all but Phil Daley and Ross Lawley on the Flying Fifteen by the first mark.
The whole fleet then headed out to the Mountain mark with plenty of jockeying for position amongst the four lasers. Toby Herbert and his Dad Derrick joined the fleet on their Hobie 14 along with Jason sailing one of the club’s lasers. The shortened three lap course tested all the sailors with the breeze varying in direction and strength over the course.
Tim led the cats home, but Nick Deacon was close enough to take the handicap win from Tim with Ian and Toby in third and fourth. Phil won the mono-hull race followed by Gote Vikstrom, Brodie Hamilton, Kerry McGaw and Jason.
A warm Saturday afternoon saw eight boats rig up on the beach and compete in two very different races. The fleet sailed around Lion and Cub islands in a light and shifting easterly breeze. Martin Van Weel led the fleet past the islands and across the main lake to the Mountain mark. Tim Symons passed Martin on the last leg and was first back to the beach. Bill Smits and his Maricat was close to the bigger cats until several shifts in the wind saw him slow down and allow some of the lasers to catch up.
Gote Vikstrom took the win on corrected times followed by Ross Lawley on his OK dinghy and Terry Lee with his son Lucas calling tactics. Kristian Blackmore-Lee and Cooper Stephenson brought up the rear on the club’s Windrush cat.
Five boats started race two in a strong 15 knot breeze. Martin and Tim’s big cats zoomed around the course in about half the time taken by the lasers. Terry and Lucas retired from the windy race while Kerry McGaw took a swim at the Bay mark. Tim led Martin around the short two lap windward / leeward course with Gote and Kerry following on their lasers. Martin took the win on handicap corrected time followed by Tim Gote and Kerry..
A few new members have joined the club this season and all the members look forward to more local sailors taking the plunge on beautiful Lake Jindabyne.
