Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club celebrates season

23 Jun, 2011 12:35 PM
THE sailing season was officially brought to a close on May 28 with the annual presentation dinner at the clubhouse.

A group of dedicated sailors and their families dressed up for the “Hollywood goes to Sea” theme on a cold Jindabyne evening.

The Wednesday Twilight series was run over 18 races and two divisions. All 18 races were held this season with no races abandoned due to bad weather. All sailors can drop their six worst results with the 12 best results counted.

Phil Daley and his crew of Tony Hasaart were successful in their Flying Fifteen with nine wins and three seconds in the mono-hull division. The minor paces were filled by Ross Lawley on his OK dinghy and Terry Lee on his Laser.

The multihull division series was closely contested with the lead changing many times. Tim Symons and his Hobie 17, with six wins, two seconds and four thirds, narrowly edged out Ian Foster and another Hobie 17, with three wins, six seconds, two thirds and a fourth. Martin Van Weel and his Mosquito was a close third. The Saturday afternoon series combined the two divisions.

This series was won by Laser sailor Terry Lee with Tim Symons on his Hobie 17 second and Ross Lawley on his OK Dinghy third. Tim’s combined series scores also gave him the Club championship for 2010-2011 with Terry Lee and Ross Lawley in second and third places.

The Sir William Hudson Memorial series was held over three Saturday afternoons during January 2011. Terry Lee won this prestigious trophy series from Ross Lawley and Peter Hickling.

The Foundation Cup on three Wednesday evenings during January was close. Phil Daley won this series on a count back from Jonathan Disher and his Hobie 17 with Terry Lee on his Laser third.

The Annual Marathon race was held on February 26 with one cat, one Laser and an OK racing twice around Lion and Cub Islands plus two Bay to Quarry laps.

The windy day allowed Tim Symons and his Hobie 17 to lead the two mono-hulls around the course and take the win from Terry and Ross, who broke a foot strap in all the action. Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club’s 2011-2012 season will start in early November, 3pm on Saturday afternoons and 6pm on Wednesday evenings.

The Wednesday races are followed by a barbecue dinner and a chat about the race.
