Wednesday, December 2 shaped up as a sunny summer evening over Lake Jindabyne with a light south-easterly breeze. Three division 1 boats (1 hull) and four division 2 boats (2 hulls) turned up to battle on the lake for heat 5 of the 2009/10 Twilight series.
The race started with an “honesty system” as the sailors had to act as race officers as well as participants. All started at the right hand end of the long start line, except Tim Symons who got a great start at the opposite end on his Hobie 17 to lead the fleet up the first leg to the Quarry mark. The cats then headed out to the Mountain mark on a long square run. Many gybes later and the 2 Hobie 17s had cleared out from Martin Van Weel on his mosquito and Barry Dennis and Ross Tattersall on the Hobie 16. While Tim and Jonathon Disher battled for the lead in the light breeze, the other 2 cats battled just as ferociously for third and fourth. Meanwhile Phil Daley and Tony Hasaart slowly built up a handy lead over Ross Lawley in his OK dinghy and Steve Osborne on the club’s Laser Radial. Ross tried hard to catch up with Phil and Tony and finished well in the light breeze.
The variable and softening breeze caused a shortened race this week and provided a difficult work back to the beach. Tim managed to stay close enough to Jonathon to win the cat’s race on handicap for the first time this season. The Division 1 race saw Phil and Tony win their third heat in a row. It was great to see Ross, Steve, Barry and Ross T sailing for the first time this season.
Phil Daley and Tony Hasaart were the race officers for the heat 6 twilight race on Wednesday, December 9. They set the mixed fleet ff into a fresh Westerly breeze. Bill Smits misjudged the start and crossed 17 seconds before the gun. While the boats headed off on the first triangle, Ross Tatterall waited on the beach for his skipper to arrive.
Barry Dennis and Ross finally made it to the start line 20 minutes after the start. Gote Vikstrom joined the Division 1 fleet for the first time this season and sailed his laser into first place in front of Ross Lawley and his OK dinghy. In the cats Martin Van Weel kept in touch with Jonathon Disher to win on handicap with Tim Symons a distant third.
Heat 7 of the 2009/10 season, Saturday, December 12, doubled up as the annual marathon race. One cat and three mono hulls set off on a long square run beside Lion Island towards Church Rocks. Rounding the yellow marker brought the boats onto a long windward leg around the mountain mark and back towards the club. The lonely Hobie 17 sped away in the strong breeze and white capped waves. This sunny and windy day proved to be to the cat’s liking as Tim Symons finished about half an hour ahead of the next two lasers. Terry Lee and Gote Vikstrom battled for over an hour over the large and small triangle course. Gote made the best of the shifting breeze near the bay mark and led Terry back to the beach. The handicap adjusted results saw Tim first, Gote second, Terry third and Ross Lawley in fourth place.
There is plenty of room on the lake for lots more, so come and join us enjoying “messing around in boats” at Lake Jindabyne Sailing Club.
