Rebecca Sekulic, 17, is ranked 524 in the world and is spending two months in Australia. She has previously been to Australia two years ago for a training academy in Brisbane.

Sekulic has recently been to Asia where she made the quarter finals of two major tournaments in Indonesia and Thailand.

The tennis star has stopped player junior tennis and is aiming to one day be in the world’s top 10. She lists Monica Seles and Maria Sharapova as her tennis idols.

Sekulic has said Australia is “nice” and is open to the idea of returning here.

“Maybe I will play more tennis in Australia, I like it here,” she said.

Sekulic’s Aunty Susan Robb lives in Jindabyne and touched base with Tom Perea to help the rising star.

Perea said she is an exceptional talent.

“Rebecca hits the ball as good as anyone and definitely has big things ahead of her,” he said.

Perea said it is fantastic to be coaching a player of this quality.

“On a personal level, it is great to be working with someone of her ability. That’s my ultimate goal to be able to work with elite athletes,” he said.

Perea said Sekulic could improve further on the mental side of her game.

“She is definitely getting better in this area,” he said.

Sekulic is born in Germany with a Croatian mum and German Dad. She is also studying by correspondence. The 17-year-old will be staying with extended family in Jindabyne for one more week.
