Bushpigs hang on for victory against Harden

04 Jun, 2009 01:09 PM
The Jindabyne Bushpigs travelled to Harden on Saturday for their forth game this season. Injurys and late withdrawals forced several changes to an already under strength side with many players filling different positions. However, the Bushpigs started well enjoying early field position, recycling the ball well and building pressure. In the 15th minute that pressure was rewarded with a penalty in front successfully converted by Dale Lee. The Bushpigs again forced their way up the field and attacked Hardens line successfully with Mathew Caldwell splitting the defense and scoring under the uprights. The try was converted again by Dale Lee. Harden hit back shortly before the break by kicking a penalty and The Bushpigs went to the halftime break leading 10-3.

In the second half, The Bushpigs began strongly by winning several of Hardens lineouts and keeping the forward momentum up. Prop Issac Maw burrowed under the defence to score a detemined try and shortly after Taku Taiaroa crossed over as well after some great play out wide by the backs. Both trys were converted and The Pigs had were cruising with a comfortable lead of 27-10 mid way through the half.

The final 20 minutes saw a fight back by Harden who scored and kept putting Jindabyne under pressure. It was clear that some of The Bushpigs forwards lacked match fitness and the lack of reserves began to show.

The Bushpigs hung on to claim an important away victory 27-15. Jindabyne Coach Michael Needham was happy with the performance of side on the day and relieved to take the points.

Best players: 3 points Matthew Caldwell, 2 points Ian Vagg, and 1 point for Jeremy Witherdin who also was players player.

This upcoming Public Holiday Long Weekend sees a general competition bye however all players from all grades are reminded that training will be on as usual.

U/16s

The Under 16 Piglets played another tough match this weekend coming up against Wests. The step up in class to play in 'A Division' of the competion is testing many of the players who are improving each week and not giving in however they are finding the competition much harder and cannot afford to relax at any point in the game. The U/16 Piglets were defeated by Wests 51 - 0. Best players: Brendan Jones, Ben Dickson.

U/10 Girl

The Miss Piglets U10s travelled to Canberra on Saturday to play Marist. The game began with both sides eager for posession. The girls defended with vigour as Mackenzie Farmer, Isabella Evans and Maddison Atkinson made forceful attempts to contain their opponents. Kirra Burke was unlucky not to add to her 8 season tries when she was brought down inches from the line after sprinting the length of the field. Rachel Hukins, Molly Jackson and Rhianna Burke made some gut busting tackles to contain the Marist attack. Choeli Cooper chased all day and never gave up and also showed us a few gutsy tackles. Ally Farmer and Lucy Clancy worked hard to keep Marist from scoring. Our forwards were overpowered in the rucks but made up for that with some fantastic defensive play. Bronwyn Brandon continues to improve on her kicking game and made great gains with her defensive play. The newly instituted 'Pink Pig' encouragement award went to Mai Johnson for her determination all day.

Special thanks to Maggs for driving the bus.
