Wise owls combat graffiti

The end of Razorback Plaza Jindabyne is being given a facelift this week with a new mural courtesy of Snowy River Shire Council’s community development team. In recent years the blank brick wall was a target for graffiti vandals. This new public art project hopes to keep the wall from being defaced whilst creating a talking point in the town.

Project coordinator Meghan Quinn said public art projects have been successful in other communities. “This wall has seen some ugly graffiti. We’re helping the community take it back. Engaging young people in the project gives them ownership. It should prevent further tagging,” she said.

Art and design teacher at Jindabyne Central Schools, Ben Eyles, is the resident art coordinator for the project and has been working with local youths on the comcept. He explained that the mural depicts the theme of knowledge. “We want to instil a love of knowledge and the owl represents this. Owls represent knowledge in almost all cultures. We will also have the word ‘knowledge’ included in many different languages,” Mr Eyles said.

The artwork should be completed by Friday. Ms Quinn hopes to undertake work on the Mitre 10 wall soon.

“We are still seeking funding. It will cost about $4,000, but I think we can get there with community support. These murals are a good way to draw the community together and get people talking about how great our local kids are,” she said.
