Principals critique My School site

04 Feb, 2010 10:33 AM
The principals of both high schools in the Snowy River Shire were relatively pleased with their school’s performance on the Federal Government’s My School website.

The performances of local schools can be analysed by the website, which has ignited debate in the community since it was launched nationwide last Thursday.

The school “rankings” on the website are based on the results from the National Assessment Programme for Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) testing for years three, five, seven and nine in 2009.

Snowy Mountains Grammar School (SMGS) in Jindabyne received strong NAPLAN results and fared well on the My School website, which saw them ranked in line with the strongest performing schools in NSW.

SMGS is a non selective school and has no entrance exam so its strong performance - especially in the year nine results - was a stand out.

“Whilst I am very pleased that the school has been shown to be performing very well, giving strong affirmation to our parent body,” SMGS principal Andrew Rostron said.

“I would not want the strength of the school’s program to be evaluated solely using such narrow criteria,” he said.

Jindabyne Central School was also pleased with their results. Principal Garry Atkinson said the online results were “exactly what we expected.

“There were no surprises. Our school data feeds directly into what is used to make up the My School site,” Mr Atkinson said.

“For an isolated country school the results are very, very positive. It is just a reflection of who we are.

“It should be remembered though that it is very dependent on that year group that it being tested. If you have a very academic year then you will have strong results,” he said.

Mr Atkinson also warned that the information does not take in to account the other things like arts and music that make up their school.
