New tourism funding

26 Jan, 2012 10:38 AM
Member for Monaro John Barilaro has announced $213,000 in funding for local tourism projects and businesses on the Monaro, as part of a wider package of $250,000 in funding to develop tourism across the Snowy Mountains region.

Ten tourism projects in the Snowy Mountains have been granted funding from the NSW Government’s $5 million Regional Tourism Product Development Funding Program.

Mr Barilaro said the Destination NSW funding would enable the Snowy Mountains to enhance visitor experiences and boost tourism to the local area.

“I am delighted to announce that a number of tourism projects have been awarded funding to further develop the visitor experience and increase the range of tourism activities and attractions in the Snowy Mountains. These projects will bring many benefits and will help to attract more visitors to the region” Mr Barilaro said.

The Jindabyne Chamber of Commerce will receive $48,000 to fund enhancements to the Easter Jindabyne Lake Light Sculpture Festival, and upgrades to lighting around Lake Jindabyne. A further $25,000 will be used to further develop heritage, ecotourism and sightseeing tours around the lake; including a pontoon loading platform to provide access for the disabled and elderly to tour Lake Jindabyne.

Funding of $15,000 will go towards the construction of a three kilometre bike track from The Diggins to Skitube, as part of the Thredbo Valley Mountain Bike Trail. Funding of $24,000 will be used to develop GPS-triggered Digital Touring for the Kosciuszko Alpine Way area.

About $29,000 to be used to develop Rolling Ground Trail Mapping in GPS; and produce electronic and printed guides of mountain bike trails across the Snowy Mountains (focusing on the product in and around Jindabyne). Another project will receive $10,000 to develop a ‘Gutti Gutti Cultural Program,’ based upon local “Wagulu” Aboriginal mountain skills and practices. Finally, funding of $36,000 will refurbish the Historic Motor Museum to establish a new historical car exhibition.

Chair of Tourism Snowy Mountains, David Sheldon welcomed the funding annoucement.
