Interested parties met in Jindabyne last week to look at the feasibility of starting a naval cadet unit for the region. A public meeting held afterwards attracted 19 people.
Aimed at both boys and girls aged 12 and half years to 19 years, the proposed unit would attract recruits from around the Monaro region.
The meeting was held at the Snow Mountains Neighbourhead Centre in Jindabyne with stakeholders from Snowy River Shire Council, Bombala High School, Jindabyne Central School and Snowy Mountains Grammar School. Other included representatives from Jindabyne Sailing Club, Maritime NSW, NSW Sport and Recreation, Mountain Life and Snowy River RSL.
Representing the navy was Canberra-based Lt. Rob Hall, Lt. Matt Woods and Lt. Cm. Mike Hardwick who lives locally.
According to organiser Meghan Quinn, youth health and development worker for the Snowy River Shire Council the cadets has nine to offer.
“Not only teaches hands on skills but increases self esteem and builds capacity for young people to manage.
“It empowers them.”
The first step in getting the unit established is to have a commitment from three people to run the unit. Anyone interested should contact Meghan Quinn on 6457 1506.
