Snowy River Shire Council has bowed to community pressure and announced this week that they are reconsidering plans to close the landfill tip in Dalgety. The tip at Eucumbene will still close as planned but the remaining tips in the shire will remain open with a fee for use until wider options can be considered. A decision will be reached over the next six months.
The planned closures were part of the Draft Management Plan for 2009/ 2010 that was passed at the extraordinary meeting that was held on Tuesday. Escalating costs of waste management in the shire under pinned the proposal.
Dalgety residents Warwick Sainsbery, Damien Doyle and Richard Cusbert addressed the council at the meeting and voiced their concerns about the planned closure. Those concerns included rural residents from outlying areas travelling a 120km round trip to Jindabyne to dump their rubbish, shop keepers in Dalgety being left with health risks from rotting food and the real risk of people dumping rubbish on private and public land because there would be no easier and accessible option.
Mayor Cahill told the meeting that the council understood these concerns and was pleased that so many residents had taken the opportunity over the past few weeks to comment on the plans through letters, public meetings and public forums at council meetings.
It was also announced that a Revolve recycling service, whereby second hand goods are sold direct from the tip, would commence in Jindabyne this year.
The issue of the rating mix was also settled at the meeting with local businesses absorbing the major increases. Residential and rural residential rates will see small increases with the big winners being the farmers who will see a decrease in the proportion of their rates entered into the mix.
It was also announced that there would be an annual rates review committee that included both councillors and staff to assist with future planning.
