Dalgety festival- a cracking good time

29 Oct, 2009 10:37 AM
For six years the banks of the Snowy River in Dalgety have come alive in November to cracking whips, thundering hooves and everything that the legend of “The Man from Snowy River” is famous.

The Snowy River Festival has become one of the most popular gatherings for people from the Snowy Mountains and beyond. This year the Festival will run from November 13 to 15 with a jam-packed itinerary of activities and competitions on offer.

The feature event will be the Snowy River Stockman’s Challenge Open Champion. This year there are 63 competitors vying for a share in the $10,000 pool of prizes.

The Challenge is made up of various stockman skills - whip cracking, horseshoeing, stock handling, cross country riding, bareback riding, packing a horse and the traditional brumby catch. Many of these skills are slowly disappearing from working properties and the creation of the Stockman’s Challenge event is a way of keeping them alive in Australia’s rural heritage.

Hawkesbury River Saddle Company is launching the Triple Crown Series where trophy saddles will be awarded to the highest scoring open, ladies and junior competitors of Dalgety, Corryong and Murrurundi Stockman’s Challenges. The first challenge of the Triple Crown Series will commence at the 2009 Snowy River Festival.

Heath Harris of the Hawkesbury River Saddle Company said the Stockman’s Challenge was a fabulous event.

“It is keeping alive the skills and the art of Australian bushmanship and horsemanship.

“It also allows history to come to life as the young people of today learn the skills of the past,” Mr Harris said.

“We are very excited about sponsoring the Triple Crown Series, as it should encourage competitors to compete in all three events.”

Mr Harris is also well known for his movie roles with horses worldwide. He will also be entertaining the crowds with his own horses.

The Stockmen’s Relay is another popular event for spectators. Sit on the banks of the Snowy River and watch 10 teams of three competitors as they shear a sheep, run and then swim the river and jump on a horse and ride back across to the finish line.

The competition is fierce but the fun is enormous for the spectator.

Oter competitions and displays this year will include a Working Sheep Dog auction on Saturday, November 14.

This is the first time this event has been held and promises to attract some of the best young working dogs in NSW.

The sellers will be given a period of time to demonstrate their dogs working ability prior to auction. Each handler and their dog will be expected to carry out disciplines of mustering sheep off the arena then participating in working their sheep through a normal sheep yard layout.

There will also be a ridden horse sale on the Saturday. Twenty horses will be available for sale and these include breeds, working horses, ponies and competition mounts.

Another first will be an exhibition and classes for Waler horses. These traditional Australian horses were made famous in World War One and for many years have faced dwindling numbers. A recent focus on this kind, loyal and talented breed has slowly seen them climb back into prominence in all disciplines.

You are just as likely to find a Waler working stock as you are in the show ring.

There will be entertainment by the Australian Light Horse, a heritage display, and a quick shear competition.

Carol Heucan - the 2008 Australian Female bush poetry champion will commentate and entertain the crowds as well as help run the bush poetry competition.

There will also be a team of working Clydesdales, a tent-pegging competition, the Cooee Cup, busking competition, a whip cracking competition for all ages, country music entertainment on Saturday night, plus all-day barbecues and full bar facilities.
