Civic minded students

The stage two students at Berridale Public School have some great plans for their community and who better to discuss them with than the Mayor of Snowy River Shire, John Cahill.

The 27 students visited Cr Cahill recently as part of their Human Society in the Environment (HSIE) studies with a focus on “co-operating communities”. The visit included a tour of the council chambers and an in depth session with Cr Cahill. The students learned about the role of a local council in society and the special place in that council for the mayoral duties.

Teacher Jan Louden said the afternoon was a delight and that Cr Cahill was interested in what the children had to say.

“They are a bright bunch of children and they had some great ideas.”

The students took what they had learned back to the classroom and decided that there were four pressing issues they would like council to consider.

1. A pedestrian access across Kosciuszko Road at the Berridale shopping centre

2. Fencing around Lions Park to keep younger children safe from the main road

3. Fix the cracks in the pavement

4. Enclose the Berridale swimming pool to extend the season.

Each child has now written an individual letter to Snowy River Shire Council regarding these ideas.
