Member for Monaro John Barilaro has called for more action to bring the telecommunication infrastructure in the Snowy Mountains and Monaro region to an acceptable standard.
“For a region that is a stone’s throw from the Nation’s Capital it is not acceptable to have third world mobile coverage and significant radio black spots,” Mr Barilaro said.
“It is one of the top complaints that I receive when I travel around the electorate, and it is high time for my federal counterparts to take action.”
Mr Barilaro’s office said it received complaints from constituents about radio and mobile phone blackspots in Jindabyne, Adaminaby, Perisher and Berridale.
Mr Barilaro said it was the responsibility of the federal government to ensure adequate telecommunication infrastructure. There were longstanding mobile reception blackspots in existence across the Snowy Mountains and Monaro and there was inadequate radio reception.
Mr Barilaro said many areas had difficulty in getting an adequate ABC radio signal.
“With ABC radio being a crucial point of information in a natural disaster, this is a serious public safety issue.”
In order to address some of the telecommunication issues in the region, the federal government would need to invest in a radio repeater in Braidwood and several mobile phone towers across the region.
“I want both the federal opposition and the current federal government to commit to fixing this problem.”
“I do not want to hear the federal member Mike Kelly resting on his laurels about NBN broadband investment while corners of my electorate are still in the stone-age.
“Nobody will want to do business in the [region] if you can’t make a phone call. We need the government to finally fix this problem and unlock the potential of our region,” Mr Barilaro said.
