 Bigger, better Perisher Resort approved

Bigger, better Perisher Resort approved

10 Mar, 2011 11:28 AM
PERISHER Resort began planning for major expansion in 1995 and this week received approval for 66 new apartments and nearly 1,000 square metres of new retail space.

Member for Monaro Steve Whan announced on Monday that stage one of the concept plan was approved. The plan was proposed in 2009.

Mr Whan said the development would boost both the economy and employment levels in the Snowy Mountains.

Head of Perisher Resort Peter Brulisauer said the new village centre and increased accommodation would enhance year round tourism. He said works could begin late next year.

“It’s really welcome news,” Mr Brulisauer said.

“Stage one will deliver the start of the village that has been planned for the resort for so long,” he said.

Parking arrangements at Perisher Resort will not change with stage one, however were future stages to be approved, the car park would be redeveloped with 800 new beds, and a retail, commercial and entertainment precinct.

No parking spaces would be lost at any stage of development according to Mr Brulisauer. He said park and ride would not replace car parks and multistorey car parks would not be built.

Perisher’s village plan was awarded the 2004 excellence award for urban design by the NSW Division of the Planning Institute of Australia.

Perisher resorts are ill advised in proposing such a large development within the park where they are under control of the NPWS.

The NPWS has been retarding tourism for over 40 years in the park and doesnt have a clue.

Perisher would be better to put their capital in a development on the Alpine way near the start of the Ski Tube on what would be freehold land without the horrible encumberance of the gum tree Gestapo (NPWS)
