Big ‘end of summer’ event to celebrate naming of Kosciuszko

09 Feb, 2012 09:36 AM
“End of summer on Mt Kosciuszko” is a three day event organised by the Strzelecki Heritage Inc and Strzelecki Hiking Club.

The event aims to promote the Snowy Mountains and celebrate the 172nd anniversary of the naming of Mt Kosciuszko by Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki in 1840.

It will give the participants an opportunity to learn about the history and geography of this region.

Participants will be able to choose one of the four ways to conquer Mt Kosciuszko:

1. Strzelecki Hike - three day bush walk via a difficult trail, starting from the Geehi via Hannels Spur and Mt Townsend to the top of Mount Kosciuszko. Strzelecki Hike will begin tomorrow (Friday) at 6am and finish on Sunday at about 9am.

2. Kosciuszko Run - 11km mountain run, starting from Charlotte Pass Village on Sunday at 10am. The run is only suitable for experienced mountain runners as it requires excellent physical fitness. Motto of Kosciuszko Run is “the sky is your limit.”

3. Strzelecki Walk – taking Main Range Track starts at Charlotte Pass car park on Sunday at 8am. Medium level of fitness required. Motto of Strzelecki Walk is Walk Your Talk.

4 Kosciuszko Ride - uncompetitive ride to Mt Kosciuszko on mountain bikes. This option also requires good level of fitness. It starts at Charlotte Pass Village on Sunday at 8.30am.

At 11am Paulina Caine, accompanied by Sylvester Gladecki, will sing the Australian Anthem at the Mt Kosciuszko summit for all the participants who make it to the top.

Participants will then return to Charlotte Pass - Strzelecki Walkers via beautiful route along the Main Range Walk and all the other participants via the Summit Track - then continue to Jindabyne.

Further entertainment is scheduled at 4pm in Banjo Paterson Park, in Jindabyne. Paulina Caine and Sylvester Gladecki will perform their original songs to officially close the “End of Summer on Mt Kosciuszko 2012”.
